March Sawdust Session with Joe Cornell - Beginning Bowls March 8, 2024 - from 8:30 am until 4:00 pm
Joe will teach you the basics of turning a simple bowl. This session is geared towards beginners starting out in woodturning or those who want to brush up on their fundamental turning skills.
The club will provide lathes, a grinder, and bathroom access during this session.
Participants should bring the following items:
One or two hardwood blanks (practice quality wood, wet or dry). Size should be in 6-9 inch range, 3 inches thick, if available. Cut with one surface as flat as possible and trim the blank to a hexagon, octagon, or circle shape.
It is suggested that you bring a second blank as a backup or for more practice. The club lathes are only suitable for bowls up to 9 inches diameter so don’t bring a larger blank.
Face shield
Face mask
A 6 or 12 inch ruler
Sandpaper (recommended grits: 120, 150 or 180, 240, 320)
The club will provide
A parting tool, bowl gouge, and a scraper for your use.
Bring whatever tools you want so we can help you learn how to use what you have. Joe will also bring an assortment of tools for attendees to try.
Recommended: bowl gouge, parting tool and any scrapers you have – negative rake or standard.
Sharpen your tools before the session. A grinder will be provided and Joe can assist with sharpening if needed.
Lunch will not be provided so bring whatever snacks and drinks you want.
