After a short discussion of his background and a display of luminaries in various stages of completion Joe will discuss why he chooses to use unseasoned (green) end-grain blanks.  Joe will then demonstrate how he creates, designs and pierces his Butterfly Rim Bowls .  Attendees will work on creating and piercing a Butterfly Rim Bowl.  Attendees that don't bring a carver will be able to take turns using the instructor's carving tools.  Whether attendees complete a bowl during the sawdust session or not, they will have a bowl to take home and complete in their own shop. 

This event is best suited for people who have experience turning bowls. 

Tool Logistics: 
The club will provide lathes, grinders, and bathroom access.

Attendees will need to bring their own safety equipment (facemask, face shield and hearing protection).
Bring a 6 to 8 inch diameter turning face grain or end grain blank which is 3 to 5 inches thick if you desire.  A suitable blank will be provided otherwise. Unseasoned green blanks are preferred. Gloves are strongly recommended. You will also need a pencil, sandpaper and a ¾ inch or larger spindle roughing gouge.

Tools for designing and piercing the vessel: 
pencil
small set of black pigma micron pens or equivalent


Bring if available: 

NSK Presto II or equivalent pneumatic carver with compressor and hoses OR a micromotor power carver capable of 45,000 RPM,
1/16 or 3/32 inch shank carbide cutter bits in styles 700L, 701L, inverted cone (any size), and round ball (any size)
1/8 shank kutzall or equivalent medium or coarse texturing bits (round, inverted cone, etc.)
collet for carver to fit carbide cutters.
*Bowl gouges ½ inch diameter or higher
*Wall thickness Calipers - digital or manual.
*Small LED Flashlight 500 lumens or higher
*A diamond hone
*A Jacobs chuck for a #2 Morse Taper tailstock - capable of ½ inch shaft drill bits
*Any negative rake scraper tools you have
*Your favorite gouges, skews and / or cup carbide tools (each lathe has a bowl gouge, negative rake scraper, and parting tool)
