What: All-Day Demonstration with Seri Robinson (Dr. Spalt)
From Seri: “I’m a professor of wood anatomy at Oregon State University. I’m also an artist. My current work involves the development of colored pigments on wood by mold fungi. As molds are some of the most reviled fungi in the world, their use in functional art is controversial and challenges our core assumptions on toxicity, functionality, and understanding of the natural world.” Additional information about Seri.
Her morning session includes turning spalted wood, which tends to be very dusty. Therefore, all attendees will be requested to wear appropriate dusk protection independent of any COVID-19 protocols that may be in place. The afternoon session includes her use of Dichloromethane (DCM or methylene chloride), and for safety purposes its application will be demonstrated outside.

Demonstration Topics and Schedule
Tips and tricks for turning spalted wood. This will involve Seri working with a variety of pieces. Focus will be on hard-to-turn pieces (e.g., punky). Participants will be invited to bring pieces they have had trouble turning (e.g., punky or soft pieces, those showing lots of tear-out, etc.)
The demonstration includes drinks and snacks; however, please bring your own lunch or plan to find a restaurant nearby while we take a 1-hour break for lunch.
Coloring with fungi pigments. Seri will provide pigments and guidance. Participants are invited to bring some pieces they want to color, which should be nearly completed and sanded to one grit coarser than final sanding.
Both Members and Non-Members can submit their payment in one of two ways: Electronic payment; or USPS check. Seating for this event is limited. Please reach out here if you have additional questions regarding Seri’s demonstration.
